MQM leader Mohammad Anwar detained in London money laundering case

LONDON (Dunya News) - Senior leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Mohammad Anwar, was arrested in London today (Wednesday) by Scotland Yards’ Counter Terrorism Command (SO15), Dunya News reported.

According to details, police arrested the 64-year-old man on suspicion of money laundering.

Officers from the Counter Terrorism Command, while conducting an operation in the northwest area of London, arrested the suspect from his residence and took him to police station for further investigation whereas police is still searching his residence to gather more proofs.

The arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into money laundering.

While talking to Dunya News, MQM leader Haider Abbas Rizvi confirmed Anwar’s arrest and said that he is under interrogation at the Central London Police Station whereas a legal team has also accompanied him there.

Five other men including MQM chief Altaf Hussain, previously arrested in connection with the investigation into money laundering, are on police bail.

The press release by the Met Police website regarding the present case also gives details of the previous arrests:

[A] aged 73 and [B] aged 44, were arrested on 5 December 2013 on suspicion of money laundering and are on police bail to dates in April.

[C] aged 61 was arrested on 3 June 2014 on suspicion of money laundering and is on police bail to a date in April.

On 12 January [D] aged 41 attended a police station in Greater Manchester by appointment where he was arrested on suspicion of money laundering and later released on police bail to a date in April.

On 17 February [E] aged 27 attended a police station in Suffolk where he was arrested on suspicion of money laundering and later released on police bail to a date in April.

Mohammad Anwar is a member of MQM’s coordination committee and is considered the right hand of Altaf Hussain.
