Saulat Mirza to be hanged in Mach jail, meets family for last time

Mirza met with 28 people including his wife and relatives for the last time.

KARACHI (Dunya news) – Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) worker Saulat Mirza is to be hanged on Thursday morning in Mach jail. Mirza was shifted from Karachi to Mach jail for his hanging. Mirza met with 28 people including his wife and relatives for the last time before he is sent to the gallows. His final statement before the death sentence is carried out was also recorded by a Magistrate. Mirza stated that he has spoken all that he had to with his family. He also stated that he owns no property. The written statement will be handed over to the family after the sentence is carried out. A heavy contingent of Frontier Corps (FC) and police has been placed around Mach jail.

On the other hand, the MQM worker’s picture in jail started to air on the media showing Mirza with an unshaven face. Provincial Interior Minister Sarfaraz Bugti took notice of this incident stating that the incidence of sneaking a mobile phone in jail will be investigated.

The 47 year old MQM worker was convicted for the murder of Karachi Electric Supply Corporation’s (KESC) former managing director Shahid Hamid, his driver and guard. He was handed out the death sentence on 5th of July 1997.

Mirza fled the country after the murder. He was arrested at the Karachi airport on his return from Bangkok in December 1998.

The Anti-terrorism court (ATC) sentenced Mirza to death by hanging in 24th of May 1999. The Sindh High Court on 21st of May 2000 rejected a plea against the sentence while Supreme Court of Pakistan did the same on 9th of March 2004. The sentence could be not carried out even after 11 years however.

A red warrant was issued for Mirza’s hanging after ban on death sentence was lifted in Pakistan.
