Summary "No justification for delay in local body elections in Punjab and Sindh": Justice Jawad S. Khawaja
ISLAMABAD (Dunya news) – The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan on Tuesday held a hearing for applications regarding local body elections. A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Jawad S Khawaja heard the case. During case hearing, Justice Jawad S Khawaja questioned that which hurdle is delaying the polls. The elections have not taken place for the last five years. The SC has demanded an explanation from the Attorney General on Wednesday for not holding local government elections.
The Election Commission presented in the SC the recommended schedule for local body elections in Sindh and Punjab. The schedule was rejected by the SC saying that the notification for the schedule should also be presented.
Khawaja stated that holding elections is like a debt for the election commission. He stated that the Election Commission has not paid its debts to the nation for the past 9 years. The SC judge stated that there was no justification for delay in local body elections in Punjab and Sindh.
Khawaja said that there are 2 political parties in Punjab and Sindh who have been in power for the past 10 years. He stated that the court is tired of giving dates again and again. These municipal elections can’t be held for the next 10 years if this continues, Khawaja stated. At this point the Election Commission held a stance that no legislation is being implemented for constituencies of province.
Khawaja remarked that the Election Commission is playing a flute of relaxation. The debt of municipal election cannot be paid like this.
