Gilani urges to make pro-poor budget

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday stressed the need for close coordination between the center and provinces to avoid overlapping of developmental schemes since duplication of efforts results in waste of precious national resources. He advised that the main targets of next years budget should be stride towards self reliance, fostering growth, reduction in unemployment and alleviation of poverty. The Prime Minister expressed these views while chairing a high level meeting to discuss various proposals for next years budget. He emphasized upon the need to mobilize sufficient local resources to get rid of dependence on foreign loans. The meeting held at the PM House was attended by the Chief Ministers of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa, PM Advisor on Finance, Minister of State for Economic Affairs and Finance, provincial ministers and advisors, federal and provincial secretaries, and chairman FBR. Earlier, Prime Ministers Advisor on Finance gave detailed briefing in the meeting on various proposals for the next years budget. He said the finance team has been preparing the upcoming budget on the guidelines given by the Prime Minister. The meeting reaffirmed the need for domestic resource mobilization including issues relating to implementation of various measures as well as the proposed value added tax for replacement of the GST. It was decided to re-convene the meeting to finalize the proposals prior to the presentation of the budget for 2010-2011 in the National Assembly.
