Hunza lake: 2,000 families evacuate Batgram

Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani reached Gilgit on Friday morning to meet the affectees of the Attabad lake and review the overall situation. The prime minister is flanked by Information minister Qamaruz Zaman Kaira and Interior Minister Rehman Malik.During his visit, the PM allotted Rs800 million for the affectees. The lake situation gets alarming as water is just 3kms away from the spillway while Batgram administration ordered around 2,000 families to evacuate the area. A 4-feet water surge was recorded on Thursday.The house of Gilgit assembly member Mudassar Shahs house in Gulmit has also been submerged. The busting of the lake would likely to cause submersion of Thakot Bridge made with a cost of Rs1billion besides Alai Power Project. DCO Batgram directed evacuation of the areas including Thakot, Kund, Shaltai, Anbar, Jhambhar, Korian and Otal amid fear of delusion River Indus. Relief camps have also been established in the said areas.
