TTP key commander Adnan Rashid arrested from South Waziristan: sources
The TTP commander was arrested in injured condition from Shakai area of South Waziristan.
PESHAWAR (Dunya News) - Pakistani security forces have arrested Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) key commander Adnan Rashid.
According to sources, Adnan Rashid was injured four days ago in an encounter with security forces when he tried to escape from North Waziristan’s cordoned off area amid Zar-b-Azb operation. Later he was arrested by the forces in Shakai area of South Waziristan.
He has been shifted to an undisclosed location by a helicopter, the sources added.
On 22 January 2014, media reports claimed that Adnan Rasheed along with five family members and 25 other militants was killed in airstrikes in Mir Ali.
At that time, some official sources had the confirmed the news whereas the Taliban had denied it.
Adnan Rasheed is a key militant commander and involved in a number of high profile terrorist incidents including Kamra Airbase attack, D.I Khan Jail break and attack on former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf.
Adnan Rashid, who was serving a jail term for attacking former president Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf, had escaped from Bannu Jail on Aril 15, 2012 after an attack by insurgents armed with guns, grenades and rockets. Nearly 400 prisoners including Taliban militants also escaped in the jail break.
Rashid also gained attention by writing a letter to teenage education activist Malala Yousafzai, who was shot in the head by the Taliban in an attempt to kill her. Adnan Rashid had said he wished the attack hadn t happened, but told Malala that she was targeted for speaking ill of the Taliban.
The former junior technician of Pakistan Air Force (PAF), Rashid is a resident of Chota Lahore area of Swabi district of Khyber-Pakhtukhwa.
He is fluent in English, Pashto and Urdu. He used to contribute to several social networking sites including Blogs and Facebook from the prison. He had joined PAF in 1997. He was around 24 when he was arrested in early 2004.
Prior to his escape from Bannu Jail, Rashid in an interview to a foreign news channel claimed that he was innocent and his only crime was that he had voted “No” in the referendum held by the then military ruler Gen Musharraf.
