Muzaffargarh self-immolation: SC expresses disappointment over police report
The apex court assured victim's mother that justice will prevail.
KARACHI (Web Desk) - Supreme Court of Pakistan today (Monday) expressed disappointment over police report in a case related to self-immolation of an alleged rape victim in Muzaffargarh, Dunya News reported.
A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, heard the case.
Police in its investigation report told court that victim Amna Bibi was not sexually assaulted. Additional IG Khaliq Daad Malik told court the whole incident was a ploy to trap the suspects.
Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jilani instantly dismissed the report, stating that how a woman can set herself on fire for a ‘fake story.’
The bench also criticised police, stating that the police could also claim that the victim herself did not exist and the incident had not taken place in its entirety.
Expressing dissatisfaction over the report, the apex court directed Multan District and Session Judge to conduct judicial inquiry into the incident.
The chief justice also called the victim’s mother Nizam Bibi to the rostrum and assured her that justice will prevail.
Amina Bibi, aged 18 according to police, doused herself with petrol and set herself alight on March 13, 2014 in front of a police station in the village of Beet Meer Hazar in Muzaffargarh district of Punjab.
The victim took the desperate measure when a local court in Muzaffargarh dropped the case following a police report which said she had not been raped.
