US Secretary of Defence Robert Gates on Thursday called on Pakistani counterpart Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar, Chief of Army Staff Gen. Kayani and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Tariq Majeed. Robert Gates and Ahmed Mukhtar discussed strategic ties, war on terror and regional security.According to sources, Mukhtar told his US counterpart that Pakistan wanted peace in Afghanistan, as both the countries were interrelated in terms of security situation. Gates has assured Mukhtar of consistent support in war against terrorism, sources added. The visiting dignitary remained with Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani for some time and discussed matters of mutual interest. Earlier, on arrival at General Headquarters, Robert Gates laid wreath at Yadgar-e-Shuhada. A smartly turned out contingent of Pakistan Army presented the guard of honour. Robert Gates also met with Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Tariq Majeed and discussed matters of mutual interest. US Secretary Robert Gates is visiting Pakistan to consult with senior Pakistani leaders and solicit their views on a broader strategic dialogue regarding the link between security in Afghanistan and Pakistan, stability in the region, the threat of extremism in Asia, efforts to reduce illicit drugs and the importance of maritime security and cooperation.
