(Web Desk) - National Assembly on Tuesday passed a unanimous resolution urging the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to fix new date for holding of local government elections after putting in place all legal and administrative arrangements throughout the country.
The resolution moved by Dr. Arif Alvi states that holding local government elections in haste may be harmful to democratic process of the country.
It was also mentioned in the resolution that the House is fully conscious of the imperative to hold local government elections in accordance with the Constitution.
It demanded of the Election Commission to carry out its functions as stated in the constitution and hold elections in free‚ fair and transparent manner.
Earlier today, the Supreme Court rejected an application filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan to postpone local bodies elections for three or four months.
The apex court ruled that all petitions regarding local bodies election had already been disposed off on November 5, and declared the current petition as non-maintainable.
The polls are scheduled for November 27 in Sindh and December 7 in Punjab and Balochistan – the dates provided as options to the ECP by the Supreme Court.
