Govt, Opp agree on Ch Qamar Zaman as Chairman NAB
Sources say PM and Opposition leader have agreed to appoint Ch Qamar Zaman as Chairman NAB.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The name of Qamar Zaman was finalised after a telephonic contact between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Opposition leader in the National Assembly on Tuesday, October 08, 2013
It is important to note that Qamar Zaman was not among the personalities being considered for the post.
Earlier, prime minister and Opposition leader were considering the names of Justice Ch Ejaz and Justice Ajmal Mian as probable candidates.
Prime Minister Sharif and Syed Khursheed Shah had held several meetings over the appointment of Chairman NAB.
Choudhry Qamar Zaman is currently serving as Secretary Interior,
He has also served as education secretary.
NAB, the country’s top anti-graft watchdog, has almost become dysfunctional after the Supreme Court dismissed the then NAB chairman, Fasih Bokhari, through its May 28 judgment.
During a previous meeting between the PM and the opposition leader, the names of Sardar Raza and Rehman Hussain Jaffri came under discussion but a consensus was not reached.
Previously, the opposition leader nominated Justice (retd) Bhagwandas as a candidate for the post. Finance Minister Ishaq Dar in July formally informed Syed Khursheed Shah that Justice (retd) Bhagwandas did not fulfill the mandatory criteria for holding the post of Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB), since the former judge had recently retired as Chairman Federal Public Service Commission.
