RAWALPINDI (Web Desk) - Pakistani and Russian to military leadership, Monday, discussed ways to improve bilateral defence cooperation.
The enhanced cooperation in defence field may further strengthen Pakistani defence against foreign threats, especially, increased supply of Russain military and defence hardware can reduce Pakistan’s dependence on western countries.
Russian Commander in Chief Col Gen Vladimir V. Chirkin, called on Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani here at General Headquarters (GHQ).
Both the heads chiefs of respective countries two discussed matters of mutual interest with emphasis on improving defence cooperation between Russia and Pakistan especially Army to Army relations. Overall security situation in the region was also deliberated.
General Chirkin also attended a wreath laying ceremony at Shuhada Monument and was presented a guard of honour by a smartly turned out contingent of Pakistan Army.
Defence analysts declared the meeting between top military brace as significant in the backdrop of existing regional and international environment. Analysts also commented that enhanced cooperation between Pakistan and Russia in defence field could reduce Pakistan’s dependence on western countries.
Pakistani army had been relying on American and western countries for the provision of military arsenal since decades, which had proved costlier than the Russian. A shift in Pakistan’s policy in this regard may not only reduce expenditures was foreign exchange as well as may pave way for future enhanced regional cooperation.
Analysts say that Pakistan military’s capacity targeting terrorists can be increased by many times, if it is provided with Russian MI-17 and MI-35 armed and gunship helicopters. Moreover, such a development can also make up Pakistan’s defence imbalance with India.
