QUETTA (Dunya News) - Security has been beefed up at prisons across Balochistan province in the wake of a brazen militant attack on a jail in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Dera Ismail Khan town, which led to the escape of nearly 250 prisoners.

Frontier Constabulary commandoes have been deployed inside and outside the jails on the home ministry's orders.

The ministry has also sought record of 145 dangerous prisoners confined in 11 jails of Balochistan.

On Monday night, dozens of Tehreek-e-Taliban militants armed with guns, grenades and bombs attacked Dera Ismail Khan Central Jail and freed more than 175 prisoners including 39 "dangerous terrorists"

The militants also killed six policemen, six prisoners and two civilians during the attack.

As per details, around 70 militants arrived at the prison by car and motorcycle at around 11.30pm and their assault lasted for about four and a half hours until most of the fighters escaped.

Later, at least 23 escaped prisoners voluntarily surrendered themselves to police on Wednesday.

Two Taliban commanders said that 25 prisoners had arrived in the South Waziristan tribal area and were travelling on to North Waziristan.

The deadly jailbreak in the town of Dera Ismail Khan was codenamed Freedom From Death, cost 11.5 million rupees (£75,600) and took six months to plan, according to the commanders, who remained anonymous.

The attack came a year after a similar mass jailbreak in the northern town of Bannu which Taliban militants said was carried out with inside help from prison guards. An inquiry later found there were far fewer guards on duty than there should have been.

The assaults raise serious questions about state institutions' capacity to battle the TTP-led insurgency that has raged for years and killed tens of thousands of security personnel and civilians.
