Summary The ruling party’s leadership has ruled out all the rumours about postponement of general elections.
KARACHI:-A meeting of senior leaders of Pakistan People’s Party has decided to set up a four-member committee to talk with the political forces and Punjab Government on the situation in the wake of long march call announced by Dr Tahir ul Qadri.
The meeting held in Karachi was chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari.
The committee would be comprised of Federal Ministers Khurshid Shah‚ Farooq Naek and Nazar Muhammad Gondal and Senator Mian Raza Rabbani.
Presidential spokesperson Senator Farhatullah Babar said the meeting discussed the current political situation in the country.
They reiterated the commitment of the government and the party to thwart any attempt to postpone the elections.
The meeting made it clear that elections will be held on time as stipulated in the Constitution and no delay‚ even for a day‚ will be permitted under any pretext.
The meeting noted that if elections can be held in war-torn Afghanistan and Iraq, there was no reason that these could not be held in Pakistan on time.
The PPP leadership emphasized that no one will be permitted to deprive the people of their right to elect their representatives.
The meeting also expressed its determination to maintain law and order at all costs and to protect the life and property of citizens against any adventurism and under all circumstances.

President Asif Ali Zardari also summoned a meeting of the leaders of allied parties at Bilawal House on Thursday.
