The Supreme Court has also asked the Petroleum Ministry to honour the constitutional rights of the consumers.A two-member bench headed by the Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry was hearing the case against the CNG prices. The CJP took notice of Dr Asim’s statement in Dunya News programme and sought the explanation from the petroleum secretary.Dr Asim had said the stay order given by the Supreme Court on petroleum products was the cause of the current crisis and was an impediment to implement the petroleum policy. The court said the CNG prices were fixed by OGRA and not by the court. Justice Jawad S Khwaja said no one can dictate the court. This was the question of the rights of millions of consumers. Now OGRA has to convince the court there would be no exploitation of the consumers, the court added. The OGRA has to abide by the sections 7, 8 and 9 of its law. OGRA has to work as a watchdog of the consumers’ rights and not as a lapdog of the government, the court remarked. The court ordered the forensic audit of the CNG prices and kept the prices till next hearing.
