Addressing a full court reference on the occasion of Justice Shakirullah Jan’s retirement, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said the courts were fully cognisant of their responsibilities for protection of democracy and constitution. He said the country was passing through a critical phase and responsibility rests on all of us to steer it out of the crises.Chaudhry maintained that the judiciary held a position parallel to that of the legislature and of the executive. He added that the existence of and respect for an independent judiciary was inevitable for the state.
