Summary The government has drafted a Bill to establish Federal Food Safety Regulatory Authority.
It aims at increasing the country’s market access to international markets through export of quality agriculture products.According to an official, at the same time, imports of animal, plant, fish and fishery products would be subject to quality check for eliminating chances of un-safe food hazards and inferior quality produce, entering into the country.Establishment of a Federal Food Safety Regulatory Authority would be a land mark achievement as it would help ensure “Safe Food for Everyone”.The official said a Bill has been drafted for establishment of “Food Safety, Animal and Plant Health Regulatory Authority” in consultation with concerned Federal Ministries, Divisions and Provincial Departments and the help of International SPS experts. After meeting codal formalities the bill will be tabled to the Parliament for enactment.Over Rs 300 million has been utilized against the cost of the project Rs 415 million whereas the allocation for current financial year 2012-13 is Rs 70 million.
