AG senses 'prejudice' in court proceeding

Summary SC on Wednesday resumed the hearing of petitions challenging Contempt of Court Act 2012.

A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry resumed hearing of identical petitions challenging the newly enacted Contempt of Court law.Submitting his arguments Attorney General Irfan Qadir said the newly enacted contempt of court law will not affect independence of the judiciary.He said the new law is similar to the 1976 contempt of court act. He prayed that all stakeholders be given the opportunity to present their stance.Earlier‚ the Attorney General raised objections on the four of the sitting benches saying they seem to be biased.On this the Chief Justice said that the Attorney General is not representing the federation in the case but has appeared on the court notice.The Chief Justice asked the Attorney General if he had any objection on the judges he must have raised at the beginning of the hearing of the case.The court also directed the attorney general to name the judges as well as his reasons for calling them prejudiced in writing.
