Summary The Supreme Court has said that new law was made to provide immunity to the privileged class.
A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Shakirullah Jan, Justice Khilji Arif Hussain, Justice Jawad S Khawaja and Justice Tassadduq Hussain Jilani heard the petitions against the contempt of court law.Counsel for the petitioner said that no consultation was made while passing the new law, adding that the opposition had staged a walk out of the Parliament when the law was tabled.The CJP said that how it could be possible that no consultation was done as discussions do take place before the passing of any law.Justice Khawaja observed that one should not rely on media reports in the absence of a record of the parliamentary proceedings. Moreover, Justice Khawaja remarked that with the new law, an attempt had been made to provide immunity to the privileged class.
