President calls for boosting mercantile ties with Japan

Summary President has invited Japanese investors to help exploit coal reservoirs for meeting energy crisis.

President Asif Ali Zardari has called for intensifying Pakistan-Japan cooperation in business‚ trade and investment.He was speaking at the Pakistan-Japan Business Roundtable held in Islamabad on Monday. The President said Japan can benefit from Pakistans cheap workforce‚ vast reservoir of natural resources and its strategic location. The President said Pakistan is facing energy shortage.He urged Japanese investors to help exploit wind and solar resources and 186 billion tonnes of coal reservoirs. Referring to the issue of terrorism‚ the President said the best way to fight the menace is to generate economic activity in the region.He said Pakistan has been working with India to improve its relations to ensure peace in the region. Recent developments in trade relations are a turning point for stability in the region.The President called upon Japanese investors to bring in new technologies for development of agriculture sector in Pakistan besides exploiting opportunities in leather industry‚ surgical instruments‚ IT‚ fishing‚ gems and jewellery and infrastructure development.President Zardari said despite challenges Pakistans economy has shown resilience. He also pointed out that despite Moodys downgrading of Pakistans credit rating; Karachi Stock Exchange is going up.Chairman of the Japanese Association of Commerce and Industry gave an overview of deliberations of the business roundtable.
