Summary Delay in completion of hydel projects has caused burden of Rs 7.37 per unit on consumers.

According to Wapda officials, electricity generated out of Tarbela, Mangla, Ghazi Brotha and other hydel projects is being sold by Rs 1.54 per unit while electricity generated out of furnace oil and gas is being putting for sale by Rs 8.74 per unit.So far as the electricity generated by private power companies is concerned, it is available at the price of Rs 9.07. According to experts, Pakistani rivers have capacity to generate about 40,000 MW but management arranged for only 6,600 MW.About 600 MW electricity is likely from Jinnah Hydro Power Project, Alai Khwar, Dabair Khawair, Sat Para Dam and Gomal Dam after hectic labour of eight years. If rulers had focused their attention on national issues and preferred hydel power projects, masses would have been provided with cheap electricity on low rates.
