Agencies report calls Bannu jailbreak inside job

Summary Bannu jail attack was an inside job as militants were operating in connivance with some jail staff.

This has been revealed in the preliminary report about the attack on Bannu jail that resulted in release of 400 inmates, most amongst them hardened criminals.The report, prepared by intelligence agencies, notes that 30 officials were deputed inside the jail while 6 were on duty outside. However, none of them offered any resistance to the attackers, the report said.The policemen were armed with four LMG rifles. Four policemen were injured in the attack.Sources said the number of attackers was in the range of 80, and planning was made months in advance.The report also notes that electricity of the jail was switched off at the time of the attack, raising several suspicions. On the other hand, the statements of policemen are also divergent.Sources said that in January, the intelligence agencies had indicated possibility of an attack on the jail. They has also feared attacks on Kohat base and several police stations.
