(Reuters) - A tweet sent by the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See in Vatican City showing a Pride flag hung outside the embassy building led to inaccurate claims by users online that rainbow flags have never been flown by U.S. embassies in Muslim majority countries during the Biden presidency. Reuters found numerous examples of Pride flags flown by such embassies in countries where Islam is the dominant religion, including outside U.S. embassies in Kosovo and the United Arab Emirates.

The embassy Twitter account (@USinHolySee) posted the image on June 1, 2022, with a caption that reads: “Today is the start of #Pride Month. The United States respects and promotes the equality and human dignity of all people including the LGBTQIA+ community. #PrideMonth #AllInclusive #Pride2022

A screenshot of a retweet that was also shared on other social media platforms reads: “Let s be clear: the Biden administration would never do this in an Islamic country. This is anti-Catholic bigotry (archive.ph/wip/F6DwQ),
