Clint Eastwood receives Japanese Award in LA

Acclaimed Hollywood actor and director Clint Eastwood received a prestigious award from the Japanese government. At a ceremony held at the Office of the Consulate-General of Japan in Los Angeles, Eastwood, 79, was presented with the Order of the Rising Sun for fostering mutual understanding between the Japanese and Americans through his two films focusing on the Battle of Iwo Jima. Eastwoods two films released in 2006, Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima, depict the brutal 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II from the perspective of American and Japanese soldiers respectively. The Order of the Rising Sun is Japans oldest decoration and is conferred on behalf of the Emperor of Japan. Past honourees include politicians, academics and diplomats. Created by Emperor Meiji in 1875, the award is considered one of the countrys highest honours, second only to the Order of the Chrysanthemum, which is reserved for politicians, military leaders and royalty.
