The artists from across the world participated in the international folk festival with fervour and gaiety in the Kullu valley of Indias northern Himachal Pradesh state.International Kullu Dussehra Festival is also celebrated as Folk Dance Festival. In Hindu mythology, Dussehra is celebrated to mark the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana by burning effigies of Ravana across India.Celebrations last for a week in Kullu as the festival is celebrated in a different way as compared to other parts of the country.A large number of artists from foreign countries throng at the festival. This year cultural groups from Ukraine, Syrian, and Nepal will be participating in the folk dance festival. Russian folk dance artist performed various Russian dances and enthralled audience on the first day of the festival.Artists from Gujarat, Orissa and Chamba, Kinnaur and Kullu also presented their folk dances. The festival is famous for its rich cultural heritage.The festival in Kullu dates back to 1637 when Raja Jagat Singh, who was the ruler of the Kullu Valley, invited all the local deities to participate in the festival. Since then, the assembly of deities from the villages across Kullu district has become a tradition.
