Summary Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy won the Oscar last night for her movie 'A Girl in the River'

LAHORE: (Web Desk) – Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who had won the Oscar award for her documentary ‘A Girl in the River’, has received applause from all sides for her work. However, there were a few in Pakistan who trended the hash-tag #WeDisownSharmeen on Twitter.

According to those trending this topic, the award was given to Chinoy only because she ‘defamed’ Pakistan through her movies. They said that she was being presented as a ‘hero’ in the media since the media was working on a negative agenda.

Some Bella said that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy did nothing but gave another reason to the  world  to defame Pakistan and wondered how could Pakistanis support such a person.

It looks like a threat, and not even a veiled one. "Soon she ll face real life experience".

Some Hanzala said that the story Sharmeen highlighted in her documentary was invented by her and had nothing to do with reality. So he felt that it was a  shame for all of us .

Shiraz Hassan was oblivious with the trend though. He disowned those disowning Sharmeen.

Some suspected Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) trends team for the hash-tag.

Although PTI Chairman Imran Khan has congratulated Sharmeen for the Oscar, there were many PTI people who condemned the same PTI s trends team for trending the hash-tag and equated them with Jamiat Ulema Islam - Fazl (JUI-F) leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who recently criticised Women Protection Bill presented in Punjab Assembly.

Some said that the trend certainly justified the need for Women Protection Bill.

Aunty Pakistan, however, defended Sharmeen with the age-old logic that remains relevant all times: Don t kill the messenger.
