Summary
Contestants drove, rolled and sometimes pushed their way to victory Japan's first Box Cart race which was held in Tokyo. Over 600 teams applied to compete in the race sponsored by Red Bull, but the finalists totaled 80 for the actual race. Ranging from cars shaped like everything from robots to sushi, the contestants were judged on originality, performance, and of course, time to complete the track. While the event is a first in Japan, designers took no time in adopting a local flair. While the costumes were a selling point for most, the speed at which contestants barreled down the course was another point of interest for others. The race was not without its bumps and bruises, as carts flipped, jumped and rolled over the finish line for the 10,000 USD first prize. The race lasted over 5 hours and saw nearly all of the contestants crossing the line, one way or the other.
