Canadas broadcasting watchdog announced new rules on Thursday requiring loud television commercials to be made quieter, starting next month.Canadians will be able to enjoy their favourite television programs without having to adjust the volume during commercial breaks, said Jean-Pierre Blais, chairman of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. The regulator investigated last year after receiving more than 7,000 complaints about ear-splitting ads.It decided that broadcasters would follow technical standards set in 2009 by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), the international technical standards body for digital television. The United States will also adopt these standards by the end of the year. They call for programs and commercials to be transmitted at a similar volume.
