Summary Scotlands teaching union is to ballot members on strike action over proposed changes to pensions.

The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) will ballot members in October over Government plans increase teachers’ pension contributions while reducing the amount they will receive in retirement.Now a decision by the EIS’s executive committee gives the green light to a formal postal ballot of its members which is set to take place throughout October. The EIS is recommending members should vote in favour of strike action.EIS general secretary Ronnie Smith said: “The message that is being sent today is that teachers have already taken more than their fair share of pain for the mistakes of the Government and the banks, and we are not prepared to accept any more.”
