(Dunya News) – Throughout the world many schools and educational institutions emphasise on the importance of career counselling where young people receive special guidance from experts regarding their future and especially the career they should opt for in keeping with their abilities and interests.

In Pakistan, career counselling barely exists which makes it hard for many children and young people to make a decision towards career selection.

Providing career counselling to young people can help them face future challenges - a system for this is absent in Pakistani educational institutions.

The problem arises when a child passes his matriculation exams and has to select courses from science to commerce for their intermediate classes without any proper guidance. Similarly, even young bachelor graduates enroll in higher programs without any counseling, which they regret later on.

According to experts, career counselling should begin when children are in grade 10, which ensures they select a career that is suitable for them. However, according to students career counselling is absent from their educational institutions. One wrong decision often costs them a lifelong regret.

Experts also emphasise that children should have a say in what they want to become. The decision should not be made for them by teachers or parents but by students themselves based on their aptitude and inclination towards a field.
