(Dunya News) – Punjab’s minister of higher education Raza Ali Gillani made it mandatory for all students in Government colleges across Punjab to maintain their attendance at 75 percent in order to appear in final board exams. But in different parts of Punjab, government institutions have failed to ensure regular attendance of students in classes.
Empty chairs and absence of students in colleges – such is the sight of many colleges in Punjab, including Layyah where the largest boys’ postgraduate college has over 3000 enrolled students, but only 40 per cent attendance of students.
Due to poor quality of education in Government colleges, many students enroll in private academies.
In Government Islamia College Sialkot only 12 percent of students maintained their regular attendance. Despite 2000 students enrolled in Sialkot’s government college many classrooms remain empty. The lower attendance is also due to the poor infrastructure of the college.

On the other hand, the same situation is in Narowal’s Government Degree College where more than 700 students are enrolled. Only 20 students out of 100 in FSc are regular, while students in Arts also have a very low attendance.
Toba Tek Singh’s Government Postgraduate College currently has 2600 students. The attendance in college is not even close to 50 percent.
Government College Jahanian has over 900 students currently enrolled. This college is among many others which have failed to maintain the required attendance of 75 percent in order to appear for the final board exams. It even fails to make 60 percent regular attendance of students.
Rahim Yar Khan’s Government College has an overall 60 percent attendance of girls and boys. Khuwaja Fareed Government College also has 60 percent attendance.
Silakot Government College’s attendance is only 12 percent, 20 percent of FSc students attend Narowal Government College. Government Postgraduate College Toba Tek Singh’s student attendance is less than 50 percent. Rahim Yar Khan’s Government College has only 60 percent attendance.
Many state-run colleges ignored notices issued by the Punjab Minister of Higher Education instructing that 75 per cent attendance of students in colleges be maintained.
Poor attendance was seen in Layyah, Okara and Sahiwal where students failed to attend colleges regularly.
Syed Raza Gillani has said that there will be no concessions and strict action will be taken for failure to comply with the orders. The minister has sent teams for surveying colleges across the province.
The same situation is in Okara, where only 40 students out of 70 attend classes of second year, making it 57 percent of attendance. Students of first year also showed poor class attendance. Students complain that colleges fail to provide transportation affects their attendance.
Speaking to Dunya News, Syed Raza Gillani stated that the department has sent in teams for further investigation. Gillani also added that the education ministry will ensure that the attendance is maintained to 75 percent in every college without any compromise.
