LAHORE (Web Desk) - Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has formally inaugurated the CM Crime Surveillance Unit to introduce smart policing and digitally monitor police performance at district, circle and police station levels across the province.

Unit head Usman Tahir briefed the chief minister on its operations and system. Under the new arrangement, the latest crime data from every police station in Punjab will be accessible with a single click, while the performance of police officers, including DPOs, DSPs and SHOs, will also be assessed.

The unit will compile data across 20 different crime categories, with experts preparing immediate data analysis reports. It will also monitor the timely resolution of citizens’ complaints and applications, with action possible against officials in cases of unnecessary delays.

The unit will also identify significant social media posts in accordance with national security requirements. Maryam Nawaz sought a police reforms plan from the Punjab inspector general and directed officials to ensure proper use of Police Station Record Management System data.

The chief minister expressed displeasure over complaints of unjustified delays in registering FIRs and directed authorities to respond promptly to negative propaganda about the police.

She said the government wanted to rid Punjab of all forms of crime and that the surveillance unit aimed to make the campaign against crime more effective. She added that good and bad individuals existed in every institution and it was unfair to question the performance of the entire police force because of a few individuals.

Maryam Nawaz also welcomed what she described as a historic downward trend in crime rates following effective reforms in Punjab.
