ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Supreme Court on Friday acquitted a convict who was sentenced to death 52 times over lack of evidence.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa heard the case.

Additional prosecutor general Punjab told that the suspect Behram alias Sufi Baba is involved in suicide attack on Sakhi Sarwar shrine and also confessed to training suicide bombers.

“Sufi Baba sends people into heaven but why does not go there himself? It is strange that no evidence is present against him. A child suicide bomber in fact himself becomes the target,” remarked the CJP.

“Police also did not provide any evidence pertaining to the statement of the suspect. The court order says that the suspect was not present on the scene at the time of blast whereas the prosecution has also failed to submit any evidence,” he added.

The court while granting the benefit of the doubt to Sufi Baba ordered to release him. The blast at the shrine claimed lives of 52 people and injured 73 others.

A trial court had sentenced him to death 52 times and life imprisonment for 73 times.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) while upholding the verdict rejected the appeal of the suspect against it.
