LONDON (Web Desk) – England’s star batter Joe Root has achieved a historic milestone during the ICC World Test Championship (WTC), becoming the first player to score 6,000 runs in the tournament’s history.

The 34-year-old reached the landmark during the fifth and final Test against India in the ongoing series. Root achieved the feat in his 69th WTC match, having participated in all four editions of the championship so far.

In addition, Root notched up his 39th Test century, surpassing Kumar Sangakkara to move into fourth place on the all-time list of most Test hundreds.

Joe Root is not only the leading run-scorer in WTC history, but also second on the all-time Test run charts, behind Sachin Tendulkar.

So far, Root has scored 13,543 runs in 158 Tests at an average of 57.49, including 39 centuries and 66 fifties, while Tendulkar amassed 15,921 runs in 200 Tests at 53.78.

Among active players, only Steve Smith of Australia comes close with 10,477 Test runs.
