BCB considered the all-rounder as all-format captain
(Web Desk) - Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) are awaiting confirmation from Shakib Al Hasan as full-time captain of their national team before they make it official, reported media.
BCB considered the all-rounder, who is currently Test and T20 captain, as all-format captain after Tamim Iqbal stepped down as the ODI captain.
President BCB Nazmul Hasan has insisted on Shakib al Hasan's to confirm his availability for all-format captaincy before they appoint him on the role ahead of the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup later this year.
It has been 72 hours since the news broke out that Shakib is considered for the role but as per the report, the negotiation between the two parties haven't been started yet.
The other reason behind such delay is cited as the requirement of BCB members' mandate to make such a move. BCB president Nazmul, however, said on Tuesday said that he got the mandate of the board, who entrusted him to take the right call following an emergency meeting between officials at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. "We had an emergency meeting today.
There was an issue regarding captaincy, as we were scheduled to decide on the Asia Cup captain. We gave the responsibility of selecting the ODI skipper to our board president," BCB's cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus told reporters after the meeting.
The report further added that BCB officials are confident that the matter will be resolved by August 12, which is also the deadline for announcing the team for the upcoming Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and Pakistan from August 30.
"He will now talk to the probable candidates for the position, and we will then finalise the matter. We hope that we will decide about the captaincy before (August) 12th, which is our deadline (for the Asia Cup squad announcement)," said Yunus. It is also learned that BCB members are in favour of Shakib Al Hasan as captain because he has the experience of leading the squad in big tournaments.
