Summary Wasim advices Amir to take his retirement back and perform well in domestic

LAHORE (Web Desk) – Former chief selector Mohammad Wasim said on Monday that it was not right to go with all the fringe players for the T20I series against Afghanistan.

Speaking to a private channel, Mr Wasim said, "Giving the opportunities to newcomers or resting the senior players are ideal in the home series. Everybody was aware of the series against New Zealand. There was a chance against the Black Caps to give the opportunities to the new talent."

Underscoring the significance of the induction of the senior players in the playing XI, Mr Wasim was of the view it was mandatory to go with the senior players along with the junior cricketers.

He highlighted the importance of Babar Azam, saying, "It would have been a huge difference if both Mohammad Haris and Saim Ayub played under the leadership of Babar Azam."

He also felt the absence of Fakhar Zaman in the series against Afghanistan.

"Resting five players in one go was not right. It would have been better to rest three players. It is quite natural that when senior players return to the starting XI, then the fringe players have to leave their position," he maintained.

He added that judging the players’ performances on the basis of two matches was unfair.

Speaking about Mohammad Nawaz and Imad Wasim, Mr Wasim said, "When I was the chief selector, there was competition between Imad Wasim and Mohammad Wasim. Nawaz’s performance was better. Imad Wasim has performed brilliantly against Afghanistan, which is one of the positive signs of Pakistan cricket."

Recounting the importance of the data collection, Mr Wasim said, "We used to get help through the data collection. Gradually, in the cricket circuit of the country, the method of data collection is being prioritised."

Expressing his thoughts over Mohammad Amir’s "cricketing fate," Mr Wasim said, "If Amir wants to make his comeback to the national team, he should take back his retirement and perform well in the domestic circuit."
