Wahab blasts former chief selector Mohammad Wasim for his 'poor selections'
LAHORE (Web Desk) – Former Pakistan fast bowler Wahab Riaz has blasted former chief selector Mohammad Wasim for his poor selections as he was sidelined from the national side.
Wahab had last played for Pakistan back in December 2020 against New Zealand, and then was left out from the side for the following South Africa series.
Riaz criticised the former chief selector for overlooking players like Shoaib Malik, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Imad Wasim during his tenure with the Pakistan Cricket Board.
"Laptop chief selector [Wasim] did poor selection. He didn t have justification for non-selection of players like Imad Wasim, Shoaib Malik and Sarfaraz Ahmed," said Riaz in an interview.
"Shoaib and Imad performed well in T20 World Cup 2021. Why their performance didn t come on his laptop? Why they were ignored for T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia? What was their fault?" he added.
The 37-year-old said age should not be the criteria to judge a player as he cited the examples of players like Misbahul Haq, Faf du Plessis and Rohit Sharma who struck their peak after the age of 30.
"Take the example of Misbah Bhai who performed for Pakistan at 40 plus. I think the peak of any cricketer starts after the age of 30. There are a lot of other examples too. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Faf Du Plessis, all are 30 plus, but performing for their teams.
"In my opinion, age must not be the criteria. If any senior player is worthy for the team, he should be selected regardless of age," he reiterated.
Meanwhile, the former pacer also slammed former PCB chairman Ramiz Raja who, he said, was the "ultimate authority" who should have. "I know Ramiz Bhai was the ultimate authority. The chief selector should have communicated with us, but in our culture, you communicate with only people who agree with you. You don’t communicate with those who know how to defend their stance," he added.
