GALLE (Web Desk) - Australian batters Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja experienced a horrible mix-up at the end of Day 1 of the ongoing first Test match between Australia and Sri Lanka left the latter fuming as Australia finished at 98-3.

The run-out took place in the 20th over as Smith failed to connect a flighted delivery from Ramesh Mendis. The ball struck his pad and reeled into the off-side with both batters committing to the single at first and reaching the middle of the pitch.

Khawaja, then pulled out leaving his partner stranded who made a valiant diving attempt to reach his crease but wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella removed the bails.

Smith could only manage to score six runs before going back to the pavilion.

Earlier, Sri Lanka was bundled out for a paltry 212 as Nathon Lyon bagged his 20th career fifer. Lyon also surpassed Sir Richard Hadlee in the all-time wicket-taking list to take the 12th spot with his tally of 432 victims. The leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson claimed three wickets.

Dickwella made a defiant 58 before the Sri Lankan innings folded in the third session following the hosts  decision to bat first at the start of the two-match series.
