CHRISTCHURCH (Dunya News) – Pakistan cricket team are likely to get permission to train in groups in Christchurch after clearing the final round of coronavirus testing scheduled on Sunday (tomorrow) ahead of their international outings against New Zealand.

Eight individuals of the 53-member Pakistan squad have tested positive for the virus since arriving in New Zealand. The results of the rest of the unit were negative on Friday but the team were not allowed to start training.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) CEO had expressed disappointment over the decision by the New Zealand authorities.

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield had said in a statement, “I have very carefully considered this situation. At this time, I continue to have ongoing concerns about the risk of cross-infection within the squad.

“There have been a number of active cases identified among the team. Public health considerations will continue to be foremost in our response to COVID-19, whether this involves individuals or teams.

“We appreciate the challenges that this decision will have for the touring team.”

It is pertinent here to mention that the visitors are scheduled to play three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) and two Tests against the Kiwis. The tour will start from December 18.
