LAHORE (Dunya News) – Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq on Monday stepped down from the PCB Cricket Committee and joined the race for the position of national team s head coach.

The former captain confirmed the news to media on Monday saying there were some speculations from past 10 days and it is really interesting to see that his name is being coined to be the future head coach of the Pakistan cricket team, but he made up his mind today only and has applied for the head coach’s post.

He said he is fully prepared for the new role he is planning and knows that the race is not going to be easy.

Misbah went on to say that he knows there will be other highly qualified, experienced and deserving candidates for this post but he has a desire to step into race for Pakistan cricket teams coach.

The PCB hopes to finalize the process by early next month, before Sri Lanka arrives for a limited-overs series.

Pakistan is looking for a team of new coaches ahead of the next international season after not renewing the contracts of head coach Mickey Stuart, batting coach Grant Flower and bowling coach Azhar Mahmood following the Cricket World Cup in England.

Former captain Waqar Younis has applied for the post of bowling coach and said he had thought about submitting his resume for the head coach but with Misbah in the race he would prefer to work as bowling coach.

The change of mind for Misbah came after he met with the PCB Director International Cricket Zakir Khan following which the PCB announced he was stepping down as a member of the Cricket Committee which recommended not renewing the contracts of former head coach Mickey Arthur and his support staff after the World Cup.

Misbah-ul-Haq top contender for head coach

Earlier a PCB official said that former skipper Misbah-ul-Haq was the top contender to be the head coach for the national team as the Mianwali-born cricketer would be applying for the post.

The officials said PCB is focusing on to hire local coaches for the team and Misbah is the top preference for the job as he would be applying for the post.

“Foreign cricketers have also applied for key slots of head coach, batting coach and bowling coach, but PCB’s preference was to hire the local coaches for the team,” he said.

However, the deadline for accepting applications for coaching staff was August 26. The official further said former cricketer Mohsin Hasan Khan, Rashid Latif, Ijaz Ahmed and Saqlain Mushtaq were also under consideration by PCB to be given different roles.
