CWC 2019: Police launch investigation after Afghan fans attack Pakistanis at Headingley.
HEADINGLEY (Web Desk) – Police have launched an investigation after Afghan fans allegedly attacked Pakistanis at Headingley during Pakistan and Afghanistan Cricket World Cup match.
According to witnesses, some fans climbed over a wall and assaulted staff as well before the crowd was dispersed by the officials.
Two 22-year-old men from London and one 17-year-old man from Birmingham were arrested on suspicion of affray afterwards.
Furthermore, the West Yorkshire Police are reviewing CCTV footage and videos posted on social media in order to identify the persons responsible for the assaults.
Assault by Afghan fans
Let it be known that the supporters of Afghan team attacked and beaten-up a Pakistani fan, wearing the green shirt outside the cricket stadium on Saturday. Reportedly, Afghan team supporters resorted to violence inside and outside the stadium.
Pakistan Foreign Office’s concerns
Foreign Office (FO) voiced its serious concern over unruly conduct of a certain group of spectators towards the Pakistan team players and scuffles during the Pakistan-Afghanistan World Cup cricket match.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal termed the incident “a matter of deep concern” and said that the use of sports venues for such malicious propaganda is unacceptable.
We expect all relevant authorities, both sports and law enforcement, to thoroughly investigate the matter and bring those responsible to account, the statement added.
The FO said the matter was also being taken up through diplomatic channels.
