Sarfraz Ahmed in trouble after racist comments on Andile Phehlukwayo
He could be suspended for several matches if he is found to have breached the ICC's code of conduct
(Web Desk) – Pakistan cricket team captain Sarfraz Ahmed could be in serious trouble after he caught making a racist comment on South Africa all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo during the second one-day international (ODI) against South Africa.
He could be suspended for several matches if he is found to have breached the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) anti-racism code.
“Abey kaale, teri ammi aaj kahaan baitheen hain? Kya parwa ke aaye hai aaj?,” Sarfraz was heard saying on stump mic.
Translated literally that is: "Hey black guy, where s your mother sitting today? What [prayer] have you got her to say for you today?"
Mike Haysman asked Ramiz Raja on the commentary, "What s he saying there Ramiz?"
"Difficult really to translate that," Ramiz replied. "It s a big long sentence."
Under article 2.1.1 of the ICC’s anti-racism code “engaging in any conduct (whether through the use of language, gestures or otherwise) which is likely to offend, insult, humiliate, intimidate, threaten, disparage or vilify any reasonable person in the position of a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee, Umpire Support Personnel or any other person (including a spectator) on the basis of their race, religion, culture, colour, descent, national or ethnic origin,” shall amount to an offence under the code.
Sarfraz’s made those comments during the 37th over of South Africa’s successful chase after Phehlukwayo survived an inside edge past this leg-stump.
An action could be taken against him after an umpire or match referee from the match, the team manager or CEO of Cricket South Africa, or ICC chief Dave Richardson reports to the ICC.
