PCB devises strategy to promote new talent, save PSL3 from corruption

LAHORE (Daily Dunya) – Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has devised compact strategy to promote new talent and to save the sport from corruption during the third edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

A meeting was held in Lahore between PCB Chairman Najam Sethi and owners of all six franchises at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Ashar Schön (Multan Sultans), Nadeem Omar (Quetta Gladiators), Javed Afridi (Peshawar Zalmi), Atif Rana (Lahore Qalandars), Salman Iqbal (Karachi Kings) and Ali Naqvi (Islamabad United) attended the session that was headed by Sethi.

It was unanimously decided to increase the players salary cap by USD 25,000 by each franchise to pick 21 players instead of 20. The additional player in each squad will be from Pakistan whose inclusion will depend upon talent hunt program, domestic performance and the ongoing T20 cup in Rawalpindi. Each team was allowed to spend USD 1.2 million on players before increasing the salary cap.

The officials approved to increase players’ shopping allowance that they receive apart from match fee. It was also decided in the meeting to improve the talent hunt program.

The players of Platinum category will bag anywhere between USD 140,000 to 230,000 while Diamond category players will earn USD 70,000 to 85,000.The worth of Gold category players will be USD 60,000.

The Silver category players will earn USD 22,000 to 33,000 whereas the emerging category players will receive USD 10,000 to 12,000.

PCB chairman also laid particular stress on the role of anti-corruption unit to keep the league away from corruption that damaged the second edition as well. Najam Sethi said the scrutiny will be tightened further to avoid any unwanted incident.

Usman Zahid was selected by the board to monitor all operations, and curfew time was also decided.

The sources have further revealed that all franchises were handed over the tournament schedule according to which the defending champions Peshawar Zalmi will lock horns with Karachi Kings on February 22 to kick off the proceedings.

Furthermore, both semifinals will be played at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, and final will be held at Karachi’s National Stadium on March 25.
