(Web Desk) – England’s leading female run-scorer Jan Brittin lost the battle against cancer at 58, British media report on Tuesday.

She scored a mammoth 1,935 runs in 27 Tests and 2,121 runs in 63 ODIs. It is said that Brittin contributed a great deal for the progress of cricket for women in the country and elsewhere. Her 1935 runs in Test matches, that are the highest ever in women’s cricket, include five centuries.

Several women cricketers and official staff have expressed grief over the death. The Surrey player had been a part of the 1993 women’s World Cup in which England emerged as triumphant, courtesy to her 410 runs in the tournament. She played four World Cups for England.

Paying tribute to Brittin, Director of England Women s Cricket Clare Connor said, “JB was one of the most quiet … pure class. An outstanding cricketer and a truly lovely person, (Who) will be remembered so fondly by the women s cricket fraternity…"

Brittin, also known as JB in her circles, was the role model for emerging female sportswomen of her time. Earlier, the English county franchise Surrey announced that a tribute will be presented to her by flying Surrey flag at half mast during the match against Yorkshire. "JB was an inspiration to me and many others growing up who were able to watch or play with one of the greatest female cricketers of all time,” said Ebony Rainford-Brent, Surrey official.
