Summary Dhawan played a brilliant knock as he scored a century to put India in commanding position

LONDON (Dunya News) - Sri Lanka had to face the mighty Indian side in a must-win game of group B as they already lost to Proteas in their first game of ICC Champions Trophy 2017.

Skipper Angelo Mathews won the toss and opted to field first at The Oval.

Overs 50, Score 321/6

After being asked to bat first at The Oval, the Indian openers started the proceedings really well as Rohit Sharma pushed a ball gently towards four more taking advantage of the width provided by Malinga.



Dhawan also took charge in the second over as he thumped Lakmal for a boundary.

India were 17 for no loss after the first five overs.

In the sixth over, Dhawan decided to cut loose as he hit two consecutive boundaries while taking full advantage of Lakmal’s lose bowling.



Lakmal was asking to be hit as Sharma also decided to punish him in the ninth over as he played stylishly to fetch two boundaries in the ninth over.

India were 48 for no loss after 10 overs. 

Although not a single boundary but still eight runs came of Pradeep’s over that was twelfth of the match.



The skipper opted to introduce spin in the shape of Gunathilaka as Dhawan gave him a warm welcome of the first ball while helping a loose delivery towards a boundary for four more.

After the first fifteen overs, India were in commanding position as they were 74 for no loss.

Gunathilaka came again for his second over as this time it was Rohit Sharma who took the charge and swept down the short fine leg for four more.



Rohit decided to gave some punishment to Parera in the twentieth over as he played muscled him away for two sixes while bring hundred for India at the same time.

India were strong as they were 107 for no loss after 20 overs.

Sharma and Dhawan were moving along quite brilliantly as Sharma hit another boundary of the bowling of Malinga in twenty third over.



In the next over of Malinga, Rohit Sharma took the charge yet again as he muscled it away for a huge six over long leg. However, Malinga came strongly in this over as he removed Sharma who was caught by Parera after scoring 78 runs.

India were 138 for the loss of one wicket after 25 overs.

To everyone’s surprise, Kohli was caught behind of the bowling of Pradeep in the next over without opening his account.

Dhawan opted to remove the pressure in the next over as he hit two boundaries in the next over of Malinga.



The same kind of treatment was given to Pradeep by Dhawan in the next over as two boundaries also came in the next over.

Gunathilaka also went for a boundary in the next over.

India were 169 for the loss of two wickets in thirty overs.

The dangerous Youvraj also failed to make an impression as he was cleaned up by Gunaratne in the thirty fourth over after scoring just seven runs.

Meanwhile, 200 up for India in 38th over!



Dhawan was in great touch today as he flicked a delivery from Lakmal towards boundary for four more.

In the fortieth over, first it was Dhoni who muscled it away for four more of Pradeep and then it was Dhawan who reached to his hundred in his style while hitting a glorious shot for a boundary.

India were 218 for the loss of three wickets after 40 overs.

It was in the forty second over that Pradeep went for some runs when Dhawan first thumped him for a huge six and later on, Dhoni punished him for two boundaries later on.

The run rate started mounting after the fortieth over.



Dhawan departed in the forty fifth over as he was caught by Mendis of the bowling of Malinga.

India were 270 for four after 45 overs.

Pandya looked aggressive from the outset as he punished a low full-toss from Lakmal for a huge six. However, the all-rounder was caught of the next delivery by Parera.

Dhoni also departed in the last over after scoring 63 runs.

India managed to score 321 in fifty overs for the loss of six wickets.
