Summary Wahab Riaz could not survive spell off Chris Woakes as he managed to glove one to keeper on nought.
Chris Woakes provided the spearhead for England’s efforts with his fine spell of fast bowling on a pitch that was generating uneven bounce. Pakistan who were looking for a target of minimum 300 were at one point 60/4 having lost both their openers to Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad respectively.
Hafeez who has struggled with his fielding in this match managed to make a golden duck while trying to cut away a ball that was caught by Root in the slips. Shan Masood, who played out 50 balls was vulnerable against the swing of Woakes and kept falling over to the ball coming in, eventually was caught off his bowling by the keeper.
Azhar Ali, also one of the victims of Woakes got out to a brilliant inswinger that was adjudged lbw by umpire Dharmasena, pretty similar to his 1st innings dismissal. Younis Khan looked edgy from the start, hopping around the crease and fishing outside offstump before chopping one on to the stumps. However he managed to add 69 runs with Shafiq at a time when Pakistan were thought of as collapsing.
Shafiq much like the first innings, looked solid and played with a lot of assurity until he was bowled out by Woakes to a ball that came in sharply. Misbah, however after scoring a 100 in the first innings got out to a duck trying to slap one over midwicket for six of the bowling off Moeen Ali. In an attempt to dominate Moeen, it was a premature call in the context of the situation.
Shah continued his good form with the bat and was particularly impressive with his flicks on the onside and drives square of the wicket. Wahab Riaz could not survive the spell off Chris Woakes as he managed to glove one to the keeper on nought.
Earlier in the day, Pakistan managed to wrap up England’s tail in the morning session as Misbah used Wahab Riaz and Yasir Shah, with Wahab rattling the stumps of Chris Broad after setting him up with a few short pitched deliveries. Finn was trapped in front of leg stump by a ball that skidded on by Yasir Shah onto his pads. In an attempt to rotate the strike and score quickly Woakes took a second run to retain strike, only to find himself falling short of the crease. All set now for an exciting finish to this Lords test that has belonged to the men on the honours board for now.
