HOBART (AFP) - Adam Voges and Shaun Marsh obliterated long-standing records as they punished the limp West Indies with a massive partnership to build an imposing first innings total in the first Hobart Test on Friday.
The West Australian pair posted the all-time highest partnership for the fourth-wicket of 449, eclipsing the 437 held by Sri Lankan pair Thilan Samaraweera and Mahela Jayawardene against Pakistan in 2009.
They fell just two runs short of Australia s all-time highest partnership for any wicket of 451 held by Bill Ponsford and Don Bradman against England at The Oval in 1934.
Voges also registered Australia s highest score against the West Indies, eclipsing Doug Walters 242 in 1969.
Marsh holed out just before lunch for 182, caught on the ropes by Darren Bravo off spinner Jomel Warrican, ending a day in total at the crease.
The relentless Australians declared at lunch after taking their total to 583 for four, with Voges unconquered on 269 and Mitch Marsh not out on one.
It was a demoralising partnership for the West Indies, who have looked well off the pace against the dominant Australians and clueless on how to stem the run flow.
Shaun Marsh surpassed his previous highest Test score of 148 against South Africa at Centurion in February last year before his dismissal.
The Australians had set up the run spree with a first day total of 438 for three -- the most runs scored by Australia on an opening day of a Test in 85 years against the West Indies.
