Najam Sethi steps aside from ICC Presidency
Najam Sethi wrote a letter to ICC Chairman Srinivasin.
LAHORE (Web Desk) – Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi on Monday withdrew as Pakistan`s candidate for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Presidency.
“Since the ICC announcement that from next year the post of ICC President will be open only to iconic test cricketers nominated by member Boards, I have increasingly felt that it is only fitting that this rule should be implemented straightaway so that one of Pakistan s great iconic cricketers should be so honoured,” Najam Sethi said in a letter forwarded to ICC Chairman Narayanaswami Srinivasin.
He further said: “Under the circumstances, I am withdrawing my nomination to ICC Presidency with immediate effect and requesting the Board of Governors of the Pakistan Cricket Board to nominate an great Pakistani ex-Test cricketer in my place.”
Sethi, a seasoned journalist, has also remained caretaker chief minister of Punjab during the last general elections and was nominated as PCB chairman in 2013 by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
He endured a tumultuous spell as the head of the PCB, being appointed and removed from the post repeatedly as a legal tussle with a rival raged.
Eventually he stepped down and Shaharyar Khan was elected as PCB chief.
