LONDON (AFP) - New Zealand s hope of getting more meaningful practice were undone ahead of next week s first Test against England by the weather after rain washed out Thursday s first day of their second and final tour match against Worcestershire.

The Black Caps made a fine start to their trip with a 66-run win over Somerset despite missing several first-choice players, including captain Brendon McCullum because of Indian Premier League commitments.

Hopes of building on that progress were dashed, however when forecast rain arrived before the scheduled start at the New Road ground in Worcester and did not let-up for the rest of the day.

However, conditions are set to relent over the remaining three days.

New Zealand s IPL players are set to join up with the rest of the squad early next week ahead of the first of a two-Test series at Lord s, due to start on Thursday, May 21.
