Summary Dean Elgar and Faf du Plessis put on an unbroken century stand as SA continued to dominate Windies
PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa: (AP) - Dean Elgar and Faf du Plessis put on an unbroken century stand as South Africa continued to dominate the West Indies on the first day of the second test at St. George s Park on Friday.
Elgar scored 85 not out and Du Plessis was unbeaten on 42 as the Proteas reached tea on 157-1 after West Indies had won the toss and asked the hosts to bat.
Although the West Indies bowling was more disciplined than it was in the first test, which it lost by an innings and 220 runs, it was no more penetrative.
Alviro Petersen was the only batsman to fall, as he spooned a short, wide delivery from Shannon Gabriel to the fielder at cover to depart for 17 during the morning session.
The West Indian bowlers did create chances after lunch, but their fielders were unable to make them count.
Du Plessis was dropped on 8 and 25, while Elgar survived a missed stumping when he was on 48.
Du Plessis and Elgar were therefore able to extend their partnership to 110 as they put on their fourth century stand in tests.
The tourists made three changes to the side that lost the first test of the three-match series, with the injured Kemar Roach unavailable and Jermaine Blackwood and Sheldon Cottrell left out.
Fast bowler Gabriel replaced Roach, while new one-day international captain Jason Holder was drafted in and 32-year-old fast bowler Kenroy Peters made his test debut.
South Africa made two changes, one of which saw Temba Bavuma become the first black African batsman to play for the Proteas.
The 24-year-old replaced the injured Quinton de Kock, while the other change saw legspinner Imran Tahir preferred to fast bowler Kyle Abbott.
