LONDON (AFP) - Former South Africa international Dale Benkenstein has been released from his contract with Durham at his own request, the English county side announced.
The 39-year-old all-rounder missed most of the 2013 season with a shoulder injury and has spent the last few months recovering from surgery in South Africa. He will now pursue a career in coaching.
"I have enjoyed being part of the Durham story and the success we have achieved," Benkenstein said in a statement released by Durham.
"I would like to express my thanks to Durham CCC for my release to pursue a coaching career."
Benkenstein joined Durham in 2005 and is the club s all-time leading scorer with 9,055 first-class runs.
He captain the team from northeast England to victory in the 2007 Friends Provident Trophy and the 2008 County Championship and was a member of the team that retained the County Championship in 2009.
